Convert HD to SD before send video to After Effect

How to convert HD to SD in after effects?
"How do I know which format is the correct one? Will it deform the image if I choose the wrong one? I am uploading on YouTube and Facebook. Do I need to use the free software included with my camcorder to convert to SD before I send the video file to after effects? pls help... "
